Every guidebook covers Seoraksan and Jungang Market, but Sokcho has a quieter, more intimate side that most tourists never discover. Here are the spots the locals love.
Abai Village & the Hand-Pulled Ferry
One of Sokcho's most unique experiences. A tiny ferry (κ°―λ°°) crosses a narrow channel β and it's powered by passengers pulling a rope. The ferry connects to Abai Village, a neighborhood founded by North Korean refugees after the Korean War.
Why visit: Living history, authentic sundae restaurants, and one of Korea's most charming micro-neighborhoods. Cost: Free (donations appreciated) Where: Near Cheongchoho Lake, east side
Cheongchoho Lake Walking Path
A 5km loop around the beautiful lagoon lake in the center of Sokcho. Flat, paved, and perfect for walking or cycling. Especially gorgeous at sunset when the mountains reflect in the still water.
Best time: Late afternoon for golden light Duration: 1β1.5 hours walking, 30 min cycling Bike rental: Available near the Expo Park
Oeongchi Badatgil (μΈμΉμΉ λ°λ·κΈΈ)
A cliff-side coastal trail that opened in recent years. Glass-bottom sections, suspension bridges, and views straight down to the crashing waves. Less crowded than any Seoraksan trail.
Length: About 1 km Difficulty: Easy (paved, railings throughout) Location: Between Sokcho Beach and Daepo Port
Sokcho Lighthouse & Old Town
The area around the lighthouse and old port has been quietly developing a creative scene. Small galleries, indie cafes, and murals hidden in alleyways. Perfect for a slow morning wander.
What to look for:
- Mural alley near the lighthouse
- Independent coffee roasters (several excellent ones within walking distance)
- Vintage shops with Korean retro goods
Sunrise Points (Beyond the Beach)
While Sokcho Beach is the popular sunrise spot, locals know better alternatives:
- Yeonggeumjeong rocks β More dramatic with wave spray
- Oeongchi coast β Elevated view over the sea
- Cheongchoho Lake bridge β Mountain + water reflection
Seasonal Hidden Gems
Spring: Cherry blossoms along the lake path (early April) Summer: Night market near Expo Park (weekends) Autumn: Drive along Route 44 for mountain foliage tunnels Winter: Steaming seafood at an empty Daepo Port β locals-only atmosphere
